Most believers tend to think of idolatry as worshiping some kind of statue that represents God. But really, an idol is simply an image of a false god. Or you could say it's a false image of God. Either way, idolatry involves an image of God that is different from the person God really is. Unfortunately, many believers have ideas about God that are different from His true nature and character. Some think God is just waiting for them to make a mistake so He can punish them. Others think that God will only bless them when they do everything exactly right with perfect motives. Many feel God will reject them because of the things they have done. But none of that accurately reflects who God truly is. God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. He has adopted us into His very own family and made us accepted in the beloved. It is vital that we have an accurate picture in our mind of who God is so that we do not make the mistake of participating in idolatry.
“Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods: I am the Lord your God.” — Leviticus 19:4 (NKJV)
