One of the big challenges in our world is that people tend not to listen to one another. Many times in conversation we are so focused on what we are going to say next that we don't even hear what the other person is saying. As a result, we are much more likely to get angry about differences rather than finding common ground to build relationships. Ultimately that need to respond, correct, and prove to others that we are right about things stems from our own insecurities. When people's insecurities collide, the result is often strife and anger. A wiser approach is to prioritize listening to others while setting aside our preoccupation to make ourselves look good. Make it a habit to be swift to listen and slow to speak. Learn your true identity in Christ. As you do, your own insecurities will fade away and you will grow more able to listen to those with opposing viewpoints without anger rising up fueling that overwhelming compulsion to correct them.

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. — James 1:19-20 (WEB)
