A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
There is something special about these words of Jesus. He was not just giving another commandment; He was giving us a game changer, a new way of living and relating to each other.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35
Jesus sets a high bar: love one another as He loved us.
That is not your run of the mill kind of love. The love Jesus has is unconditional, and He sacrificed for others. He did not just talk the talk; He walked the walk, all the way to the cross and back.
When Jesus tells us to love like He does, He means business.
Jesus does not stop there; He goes on to say that our love for one another is not just about feelings or doing nice things. It is about something much bigger, our identity as Believers.
Jesus says that the world will know we belong to Him, not by the fancy prayers we pray or the impressive sermons we preach, but by how we love each other.
We treat each other with love by showing we are different from the world. It means that every interaction, relationship, and moment is an opportunity to display the love of Jesus.
It means choosing kindness over rudeness, selflessness over selfishness, and forgiveness over grudges.
Sure, it is not always easy. Loving people can be messy, complicated, and downright challenging at times, but something incredible happens when we love like Jesus by genuinely loving one another as He loved us. His love shines through us, drawing others to Him.
Today, take Jesus at His word and love boldly, selflessly, and unapologetically. Because when we do, we are living out our identity as followers of Jesus.
What could be more empowering than that in a world starving for love?
Heavenly Father, as I read in Your Word about love, I know the love You gave for each of us is a love like no other. As I am Your child, and as I read in Your Word, love is how others know You live in me. I ask You to love through me as I show that love to others. This must be in my walk, talk, and my actions. Please do the work in me so I can show others Your love. Thank You, Father. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
