God reveals many ways to give into His Kingdom in scripture. Each way to give has different promises attached to them. Giving out of compassion to meet a need or relieve suffering is what the King James Version calls giving alms.
This almsgiving is the only type of giving Jesus said we are not to talk about. He placed no restrictions on talking about other types of giving such as our tithe, or sowing and reaping. God cares more for the dignity of the individual than He does even seeing their suffering relieved.
God will never humiliate someone in the process of helping them. But people do that very thing all the time. Jesus said when we do that, when we tell others of the alms we give out of compassion, we then disqualify ourselves from receiving God's Proverbs 19:17 promise to repay what we give to the poor.
Lack of understanding in this area is a big reason why people fail to see results from their giving and why they wrongly conclude giving and receiving does not work in the Kingdom of God.
Give generously to those in need believing God will repay according to His promise. But keep quiet about it to protect the dignity of those you help with your almsgiving because talking about it disqualifies you from God's promised repayment. | ||
