Covetousness is not a word we commonly use today. In fact, some Bible translations use the word greed instead. But covetousness is bigger than greed, because we can covet other things than just money.
For example, at the fall in the Garden of Eden, the Bible describes Eve's covetousness. She saw that the fruit was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and, "desirable to make one wise." She had an inordinate desire to possess something that wasn't hers.
The tenth commandment tells us not to covet things which do not belong to us. Jesus also tells us to guard ourselves against covetousness. And He tells us why. There is far more to life than just acquiring stuff.
It is a very worldly mindset to resent others for what they have. Our covetousness reveals our heart is influenced by mammon because it focuses on our lack and the world's limited supply.
A Kingdom focused heart can rejoice when someone else prospers because God's supply is truly unlimited. Regardless of how much someone else has, it in no way diminishes our ability to receive manifold blessings from God in that same area. Where do you focus — on your own need and lack, or on God's abundant supply? | ||
