A great many people think that if they can just get others afraid enough of the punishment they deserve for the bad things they’ve done, then that will be enough to get them to repent of their sins. But the Bible says that is not a very good or effective approach to bring people into the Kingdom of God.
In truth, it is the goodness of God that leads people to repentance, not the hammer or the Law, the fear of punishment, or the pain of suffering. Talking about the bad results of their bad behavior, all the negative effects of sin and whatnot is not very compelling for most folks. They don’t need someone to explain to them how messed up they are. Most people already know they’ve got problems.
What they do need is hope that they can tap into real power and see change in their lives. We learn about God and grow in His ways when we experience the goodness of His character and operate in line with His Kingdom. When you show people that same goodness of God and operate in the power of the Holy Spirit, you will share life and hope with them.
Then you will be a very effective minister of the gospel indeed! | ||
