What you focus on expands. This is a basic reality of how God wired our human minds to work. If you want to consistently experience God's peace, then you need to pass all that junk you worry about up to God in prayer and let Him sort it out. The challenge is that your mind is not designed to be empty. It is almost impossible to not think about something. Instead, you must think about something else. The Bible tells us exactly what kinds of things we should focus our attention on and think about. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. The more you focus on these types of things, the more that old junk you currently think about will be cleaned out of your mind. As you change your thinking in this direction, you will allow more of God's peace to permeate throughout your entire soul.

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things.— Philippians 4:8 (WEB)
