The truth will indeed make you free, but only when you know it and believe it. Most of the ways the world does stuff are exactly backwards from the ways God does them. Because you were steeped in the world's system for so many years, give yourself time to soak in God's ways. You do this by meditating on the word of God. Pick a passage of scripture and ponder it as you go through your day. The more time you give yourself to think about the truth, the more quickly you will be transformed into the image of Christ.
