People generally pay far too little attention to the words that they say. Even as believers, we can be careless with our tongues and buy into the lie that it doesn't matter because, "they're just words." Jesus said that one day we will be required to give an account for every idle word we speak. Paul said that we should let no corrupt word proceed from our mouths. James stressed the importance of our words by comparing our tongues to a spark that sets an entire forest ablaze or the rudder of a ship that determines the course of its journey. The good news in this is that you have already been given self control as a fruit of the spirit. That means you have the ability to control your own tongue with what the Holy Spirit has put within you. Therefore you can be mindful of the words you speak, exercise self control and see improvement in this area. As you begin to build a habit of speaking more wholesome and edifying words, the course of your life will change for the better. And you will be propelled towards your true destiny as a result.
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. — Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV)
