TONIGHT's Topic: "Fighting an Ongoing War!"
"On March 9th, 1974, Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda finally surrendered after waging a 30 year war against his enemies. He had been sent with three individuals in Dec of 1944 to Lubang Island in the Philippines to destroy the infrastructure of enemy forces. While his companions were slowly killed off or surrendered over the years, Hiroo continued his mission for 30 long years until finally convinced by his old commander, who was a bookkeeper in 1974 and made a special trip to the island just to bring in Hiroo Onoda.
As veterans, how many of us engage in our own ongoing private wars? With the struggle of PTSD, sometimes the wars never end for us either. Though we know we are home safe and sound, our mind still torments with sights, sounds, smells, and memories of where we've been and things we've seen. What can we do to ease that burden and finally surrender to the war within us as Hiroo Odana 30 years after his mission started?" — Veteran Steven Bates
