TONIGHT's Topic: "Relationships 101!"

It is Not Good For The Man To Be Alone

We talk about relationships a lot on Warriors For Life, and for good reason, because we are relational by nature. We face a lot of relationship changes as we go through life, and not all of those changes are good. Some of those changes leave us lonely, which can be dangerous.

A couple of years ago, I listened to a TEDx talk by a well-known neuro-scientist about why loneliness is dangerous. He spent about twenty minutes talking, showing pictures, charts, graphs and scans of people's brains, and even though he approached it from a different framework - evolution, he could have summed up his whole talk with the words God spoke thousands of years ago, "It is not good for the man to be alone".

We seem to know intuitively that we need to be part of a community, but is it really "intuitive", or is it something deeper than that?

Each time God finished a phase of Creation, He proclaimed "It is good", but after He created Man, He paused a moment, and said "It is not good...". There was something missing...

When God, in Genesis 2, fills us in on some of the details of His creative-work, He reveals the basis of this human-community. After God created Adam, God was Adam's only companion in the world, and for those who believe that "God is all we need", it was God who revealed what was unfinished in His design for humanity, not Adam. Adam had God's undivided-attention, so other than for Jesus Christ, no other human-being has had a closer-connection to God, but at this point, God revealed Adam's "need"; "It is not good for the man to be alone."

This wasn't Adam's idea: It was God's declaration.

Even though Adam hadn't realized it yet, God had created a "hole" in his heart that only another human-being, a companion, could fill. God had created Adam for relationships, to be part of a community, but since he had never had any human-relationships, he didn't know what he was missing.

The "imago dei", or "image of God", is one doctrine that divides many Christians and Bible Scholars, because there is no consensus as to what is entailed, how "far" the "imago dei" goes, but nobody disagrees that an integral-part of the "imago dei" is that we, as humans, are "hard-wired", "genetically-programmed" for community. Hermits are going against their very nature, because we aren't "wired" to be hermits, we are "wired" to be connected, and when we aren't connected, we know that something is missing.

It isn't just "eating alone at a table for two", or "sleeping-single in a double-bed", those are just the tip of the iceberg...
