TONIGHT's Topic: "Perseverance Pays Off!"
"On April 17th, 1915, Joseph Jacob Foss was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in a farmhouse that had no electricity. At age 16, four years after seeing Charles Lindbergh, he and his father paid a whopping dollar and a half apiece to fly with a pilot touring the local area with his Ford Tri-motor plane and fell in love with flying.
Working his way through college and flight school, he became a private in the National Guard, then, after two years, hitchhiked to Minneapolis to enlist in the Marine Corps Reserves to become a naval aviator. Joe was told by then he was too old to be a fighter pilot and was made an instructor at Pensacola Naval Air Station.
Joe didn't give up on his dream and kept applying for the fighter program. Told again he was too old, Joe was assigned a role in photo recon. Joe refused to give up and kept persisting. His perseverance finally paid off and he was assigned to a fighter squadron where he became one of the greatest flying aces on record with 26 confirmed kills and earning a Medal of Honor!
