TONIGHT's Topic: "Precursors to Peril!"

"In 1980, after 123 years of silence and safety, Mount St Helens vented steam into the atmosphere, giving a precursor to the peril that was to come in the following months.  Although many disregarded the danger, the earthquake preceding the steam outburst only led many professionals to sound the alarm and prepare the community for the worst.

Had no one heeded the warning, the death toll could have been much more severe but thankfully, Mt St Helens had given months of preparation to the locals and responders to dramatically reduce the casualties.  Likewise, those with PTSD often have plenty of warning indicators before their own "eruption", should one occur.

The problem, however, is identifying those precursors to peril prior to any negative reactions to post-traumatic situations.  How does one identify these precursors? Are they as obvious as whole mountaintops venting plumes of steam and ash into the sky, or are some as subtle as a twitch, a side glance, or a flinch? What can we do to help spot these precursors and how can we, as the first responders and scientists did with Mt St Helens, help mitigate the negative impacts the culmination of reactions can lead to?" Join the Warriors for Life Wednesday Mid-Week Musing peer support group with Air Force veteran, author, and peer support specialist Steven Bates as we discuss "Precursors to Peril!" and how to learn from, and lessen the effects of, PTSD.
