"When Star Trek debuted in 1966, the world was introduced to a character that was ruled by logic, suppressed his emotions, and often saved the day in a calm, cool, decisive manner. We, as veterans, were often trained to be like Mr. Spock, suppressing our emotions, deciding reactions by logic, and acting in a calm, swift, and decisive manner to remedy a situation. Unfortunately, that very training that saved our lives and
those of our fellow troops also hurt us in seeking treatment for the traumas that we experienced. We were taught not to convey our emotional side, not to show any weakness, and to manage ourselves in a pure logical manner.
Here's some logic to face though, suppressing those emotions leads to increased depression and risk of an outburst that may ultimately harm yourself or others. So though we Grok Spock and were trained to emulate him, now is the time to understand those emotions and face them full on." — TSgt (Ret) Steven Bates
