"On this day in 1989, the Berlin Wall Fell. One of the greatest symbols of oppression and control of the 20th century was now gone. Freedom came to a people that had only known hardship. Unification came to those who had only known division. Joy came to those that had known only suffering.
Much like the Berlin Wall was erected to contain the occupants of Berlin under tight control within, veterans often erect their own walls to contain emotions, fear, anxiety and other unspeakable horrors known only to themselves. We erect these walls to keep ourselves and others safe. But what happens when these walls come down, whether by choice or accident?
Walls often serve a vital and necessary function for survival and safety, and it's often said that walls make great neighbors, but sometimes walls need to fall. The question then becomes, how do we handle our walls collapsing?" — TSgt (Ret) Steven Bates
