TONIGHT's Topic: "Silent and Deadly?"
"On this day in 1914, a boy by the name of Jackie Coogan was born. What does that matter to you, you may ask? Well, you may have heard of him as the most famous child actor that ever appeared with Charlie Chaplin in the silent 1921 movie, The Kid, a movie so poignant it has been saved by the Smithsonian as a
cultural icon, or you may know him as the original Uncle Fester from the Adams' Family! What you may not know is that he was also a veteran in WWII! Jackie entered the military in March of 1941 and eventually became a glider pilot with the 1st Air Commando Group!
Not much is known of his military career other than he volunteered for hazardous glider duty in the Burma campaign, flying commandos deep inside Japanese lines. So what do we learn from the indomitable Uncle Fester? Number one, Silence is Golden! Number two, SIlence is Deadly! What does that have to do with us? When we keep silent about our problems, yes, it creates golden and peaceful times in our homes, however, those often lead to outburst from being silent too long.
So let's learn from the great Jackie Coogan who later learned talking in movies made him a household name and brought joy, not to mention using his mouth to light up the world one light bulb at a time!" — TSgt (Ret) Steven Bates
