"Gen. Curtis LeMay, the Father of the Strategic Air Command, Chief of Staff of the AIr Force, and a one-time Vice Presidential candidate, was born on this date in 1906.
Though Gen. LeMay was often thought of as harsh and brutal, one thing he believed in in SAC was checklists. Nothing was done without a checklist. Repairs, maintenance procedures, and technical plans, all had checklists. Checklists kept order and they kept things being done correctly, as well as providing solutions for situations that may have arisen unexpectedly. Checklists ensured conformity and compliance. Checklists saved lives by guaranteeing proper procedures were followed.
We can learn from Curtis LeMay in this regard. A safety checklist is an important tool to keep us alive in times of distress and dismay. It can provide assistance, answers, and aid in times we need it most." — Air Force Veteran Steven Bates
