Join Steven & Friends TONIGHT for a "A Penny For Your Thoughts!" with Warriors for Life (WFL)

Join our Volunteer, Air Force Veteran, Peer Support Specialist/AdultTrainer, and Writer/Author Steven Bates TONIGHT for "Mid-Week Musings!" edition of Warriors for Life (WFL) Online, sponsored and presented by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).

We are asking everyone to share who we are and the support that Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV) is providing through Warriors for Life (WFL). If you know someone who is a veteran, first responder or a family member/caregiver, please ask them to join us for at least one meeting so they can learn more about what we do and how they can share their wisdom with others who may be able to learn from them.

TONIGHT's Topic:  "A Penny For Your Thoughts!"

"This being April the First, we could of course pull an April Fool's joke day, but because by the time the Warriors for Life Peer Support Group meets tonight, most of you will be pranked or punned out, let's talk about what's on your mind to celebrate National One Cent Day instead.  The reason for that is simple, not only is the penny known for the expression 'A penny for your thoughts', but the first penny was inscribed by inspiration of Ben Franklin to say 'Mind Your Business' on one side and 'We Are One' on the obverse.  Both inscriptions can be taken to heart as we join together tonight. The phrase 'We Are One' is symbolic of the unity that veterans have during their struggles with PTSD and depression, as well as to remind us that we are in this together.  Then the phrase 'Mind Your Business' will be used to remind us to follow self-care procedures in sharing a buddy check with each other tonight."

The phrases "We Are One" and "Mind Your Business" provide a structured, culturally resonant framework for peer-to-peer support, transforming the isolation of PTSD and depression into a shared mission of resilience and proactive self-care. They mirror the military ethos of "never leaving a buddy behind," which is essential for veterans and first responders dealing with hidden mental health battles.

Here is how these two phrases, when combined with buddy checks, provide support:

1. "We Are One": Fostering Unity and Reducing Isolation

  • Combatting Isolation: Veterans and first responders often feel that civilians cannot understand their experiences, leading to isolation. "We Are One" reminds them they belong to a community that understands the "ache" of service, breaking the silence and stigma of PTSD.

  • Shared Identity: This phrase emphasizes that regardless of branch, rank, or specific trauma, they are united in their struggles and recovery journey, reinforcing that no one has to fight alone.

  • Peer-to-Peer Trust: It leverages the unbreakable trust built between those who served together, providing a safe space to share feelings of anxiety, shame, or sadness without judgment.

2. "Mind Your Business": Promoting Proactive Self-Care and Accountability

  • Accountability in Self-Care: "Mind Your Business" acts as a reminder for individuals to actively manage their own mental health and "compartmentalize life's daily challenges" (a vital skill during high-stress situations).

  • Reframing "Mind Your Business": In this context, it is reinterpreted as "Minding Your Business" = Minding your own well-being and maintaining professional identity and personal resilience.

  • Encouraging Professionalism in Recovery: It encourages veterans to take control of their own healing process, becoming "bulletproof" by refusing to give in to despair.

3. Buddy Checks: Putting It Together

  • Actionable Connection: The combination of these phrases encourages "buddy checks," where veterans call, text, or visit peers to check on their mental and physical well-being.

  • Early Intervention: These checks help peers recognize early signs of distress—such as social withdrawal or changes in behavior—before a situation becomes a crisis.

  • "Talk to 10" Initiative: VA initiatives like "Talk to 10" encourage veterans to take the pledge, which involves using these peer connections to share resources, improve mental health, and bridge the gap to VA and community care.

Together, these phrases provide a simple, powerful, and culturally appropriate way for veterans and first responders to support one another, proving that "healing is a journey best traveled together"

Air Force veteran, author, and Peer Support Specialist Steven Bates will facilitate the Warriors for Life Peer Support Group tonight. We will share our experiences, struggles, successes, hopes, and dreams, and perhaps find encouragement and support by discussing how our week has been and how we anticipate it will go!  Come one, Come All, as we imagine sharing a Penny for our thoughts in celebrating National One Cent Day! (oh, and Happy April Fool's Day too!).
