TONIGHT's Topic: "Why Climb the Mountain?"
"On this date, 26 April, back in 1336, the Italian humanist Petrarch and his brother, along with two servants, began the climb of 6200ft to the top of Mont Ventoux in France. His adventure was not for conquest of the mountain, not because it hadn't been done by others, for it had, but according to history, Petrarch climbed the mountain to be the first person to simply climb for the pleasure of looking down from the top. It is said also that upon reflection of the beauty of the view, Petrarch then turned to view his inner self and started his own period of self exploration. In fact, James HIllman, a renowned psychologist, states the Renaissance didn't begin with the ascent of Mont Ventoux, but with the descending, where Petrarch began his self assessment.
So, why do we climb our mountains?
