"Leading By Example — Dirty Feet!"
Tuesday's Topic: "Leading By Example — Dirty Feet!"
What would you have thought when you were in Basic Training if your Drill Sergeant had showed up for morning formation looking like he had lived in the same uniform for three days? Of course that never happened, because the first thing Drill Sergeants were taught was to lead by example. They ALWAYS looked sharp.
Have you ever heard of a Post or Base Commander who welcomed new members to their Command by going to their room and helping them get their stuff squared-away? Even that pales by comparison...
We are going to look at the supreme example of someone who "led by example", Jesus Christ. While the story of the Last Supper is familiar to many, if not most of us, we aren't going to focus on the Supper itself, but on what Jesus did before the Supper. (From John 13)
Walking was dirty-business, so foot-washing was dirty work, and was usually relegated to the lowest-ranking servant in the household. Even for those who could afford sandals, those sandals didn't provide any protection from the dust and dirt on the roads, so feet got dirty - period. It was the common-custom for someone to wash the feet of guests in the house before dinner. Where else have we seen foot-washing become the centerpiece of the discussion? Maybe Luke 7:36-50 rings a bell.
