TONIGHT's Topic: "33 Years Since Deployment!"
"On Aug 2, 33 years ago today, I boarded a plane bound for parts unknown, literally. All we knew was we were heading to a desert for a war posturing that may be a war by the time we landed. We flew in a tanker. with fighter jet escorts, all night and day it seemed, watching the tanker refuel our escorts until we no longer had any fuel to spare and they had to drop off around Spain. We were a 44-man Air Base Ground Defense Team with a mission to secure runways and landing strips for other forces to arrive, so we kept flying, even without the escorts. Landing first in Jeddah on the 3rd of Aug to get more fuel and then proceeding on to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, we were tense, nervous, and apprehensive, yet full of bravado, spit, and guts. Why do I mention this as our topic for tonight? Because it is my anniversary, It's one of many, but it's a big one. How we handle our anniversaries is just as important as how we handled the first incident, in fact, sometimes even more important." — Air Force Veteran Steven Bates
