"Beyond the Armor: Strengthening the Mind!" — Join Mikel & Friends TONIGHT for Warriors for Life (WFL)

Drop in TONIGHT with Volunteer and Army Veteran Mikel Burroughs for "Burly's Warriors" edition of Warriors for Life (WFL) Online, presented by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).

We are asking everyone to share who we are and what support that Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV) is providing via WFL. If you know someone who is a veteran, first responder or a family member/caregiver, please ask them to join us for at least one meeting so they can learn more about what we do and how they can share their wisdom with others who may be able to learn from them.

Beyond the Armor: Strengthening the Mind!

Join Mikel & Friends TONIGHT as we discuss the "Beyond the Armor: Strengthening the Mind!"

1. The "Ambush" of Sensory Overload (The TBI/PTSD Connection)

  • The Context:  When you have a TBI or PTSD, your brain loses its "filter." Background noise, flickering lights, or even the smell of a grocery store can feel like a direct threat. This isn't just "irritation"—it’s a physiological response.

  • The Pro-Tip: Use the "10% Rule."  If you know you're heading into a high-drain environment (like a busy VA clinic or a store), go in with only 10% of your daily "mental battery" expectations. If you get through it without a "flare-up," that’s a massive tactical victory.

2. Rewiring the "Internal Narrator"

  • The Context:  Invisible wounds often come with a heavy dose of "moral injury" or self-criticism. We tend to compare who we are now to who we were before the injury or the service.

  • The Action: Introduce "Radical Acceptance."  This doesn't mean giving up; it means acknowledging the terrain you are actually standing on so you can navigate it effectively. You wouldn't use an old map for a new AO—don't use an old mental map for your life today.

3. Sleep as a Tactical Requirement (Not a Luxury)

  • The Context:  Sleep deprivation mimics TBI symptoms and makes PTSD triggers 10x more likely to cause a meltdown. It is the "force multiplier" for mental health.

  • The Tip: Discuss "Digital Sunset."  Research shows that blue light from phones mimics daylight and prevents the brain from producing melatonin. Encourage everyone to turn off screens 60 minutes before bed tonight as a group challenge.

4. The "Check Engine Light" (Early Warning Signs)

  • The Context:  Most of us don't realize we're "redlining" until we've already snapped at a spouse or retreated into isolation.

  • The Action:  Identify your personal "Check Engine Light" signs.  Is it a clenched jaw? Tapping your foot? Losing your sense of humor?

5. Peer Support as "Group Recon"

  • The Insight:  Isolation is the enemy's best friend. When you're alone, your brain can convince you that you’re the only one "broken."

  • The Message:  Coming to this session is a form of Reconnaissance.  You’re learning from others' experiences, seeing where the "IEDs" (triggers) are on the path, and realizing the trail has already been blazed by those sitting right next to you on this call.
