The holidays are over, and as we reflect on this past year, it was a helluva year, all almost two years of it. 2021 was supposed to get better, but things have gone from BAD to WORSE. Sure, there is toilet paper and food on the shelves, IF you can afford them, and forget filling up your gas-tank. OUCH! We had to cancel our vacations in 2020 because everything was "locked-down", and even though things were more "open" in 2021, or not, nobody could afford to go on vacation. Of course I am not telling you anything that you don't already know, but we have to start somewhere.
As much as we would like to leave the last two years behind, many of us have issues that go far deeper than merely our circumstances, and as much as we would like to, it is very difficult to leave those things behind. It isn't as simple as turning a page or tearing off a calendar sheet.
Have you ever wished you could rip the “rear-view-mirror” off of your memories, but can't? Do you have things in your past that you would rather forget, but can’t, because just when you think that you are "past" that memory, that endless 8-track loop starts playing again? If you do, welcome to the club, because we all have nagging memories of our past that we wish that we could forget, but have trouble forgetting. Those memories are like boat-anchors, except that some of them could anchor an aircraft carrier. They are HUGE boat-anchors, boat-anchors that we need to leave behind.
Leaving our past behind is even more difficult when there are ongoing consequences for our actions, such as fractured relationships, ongoing health-issues, or even incarceration. My dad didn't get syphilis from "drinking the water", and my kids have completely cut me out of their lives. We see an up-close-and-personal example in 2 Samuel 12. While King David's troops were off to war, he decided to have his way with the wife of one of his generals, and when she got pregnant, he covered it up by having her husband murdered. While David seemed to get away with his chicanery, God made sure that it caught up with him. He wasn't going to get-off scot-free...
