Drop in with Volunteer and Army Veteran Mikel Burroughs for "Burly's Warriors" edition of Warriors for Life (WFL) Online, presented by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).
We are asking everyone to share who we are and what support that Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV) is providing via WFL. If you know someone who is a veteran, first responder or a family member/caregiver, please ask them to join us for at least one meeting so they can learn more about what we do and how they can share their wisdom with others who may be able to learn from them.

"Winning the Invisible War!"
Welcome to the table, Warriors! Whether you are a Veteran, First Responder, Active Service Member, Caregiver, or Family Member, your chair is waiting, and your six is covered. Founded by Colonel Mikel Burroughs (Ret), the Warriors for Life (WFL) Online Peer Support Network is a confidential, zero-stigma space designed by peers, for peers.

Tonight, we drop the armor. We are not here to talk about strategies on a tactical map; we are here to confront the toughest terrain of all—the Invisible Battles. For thousands of years, warriors have returned from the front lines changed, whether they were in actual war, peacetime or the front lines within the public sector. While physical scars are easily recognized, it is the invisible wounds that test our resilience daily. In this group, you do not have to fight alone. Lean in, listen, or speak when ready—because healing begins through connection.
The Core Fronts: Common Invisible Battles

Invisible wounds are cognitive, emotional, or behavioral conditions born from trauma. They fundamentally disrupt how a person processes thoughts, manages emotions, and interacts with the world.
1. Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS / PTSD)
PTS is a severe, life-altering psychological response to experiencing or witnessing death, extreme violence, or terror.
The Intrusive Memory Battle: Flashbacks and intense nightmares violently force individuals to relive past trauma as if it is happening in the current moment.
The Hypervigilance Battle: The nervous system stays permanently locked in a state of high alert, causing a rapid heart rate, intense anxiety, and constant scanning for threats.
The Avoidance Battle: Wounded individuals aggressively isolate themselves from crowds, specific places, or conversations that might trigger distressing memories.
2. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
TBI is a physical disruption of brain function, typically caused by concussions, rapid blast waves from explosions, or severe head impacts.
The Cognitive Battle: Brain fog, memory loss, and severe difficulty focusing make routine daily tasks feel completely overwhelming.
The Sensory Battle: Persistent, debilitating migraines, intense dizziness, and extreme sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds.
The Emotional Volatility Battle: Hidden damage to the frontal lobe impairs emotional regulation, leading to sudden mood swings or intense outbursts of anger.
3. Military Sexual Trauma (MST)
MST encompasses psychological trauma resulting from sexual assault or severe sexual harassment endured during military service.
The Broken Trust Battle: Betrayal by peers or leadership shatters an individual's sense of safety within their unit and creates long-term barriers to trusting anyone.
The Identity Erasure Battle: Survivors frequently struggle with deep-seated feelings of shame, self-blame, guilt, and a loss of personal identity.
The Institutional Betrayal Battle: The profound distress caused when reporting an incident leads to administrative retaliation, social isolation, or being completely dismissed.
4. The Caregiver's Battle (The Secondary Front)
Caregivers are the hidden heroes who manage the daily ripple effects of trauma within the household.
The Compassion Fatigue Battle: Constantly absorbing a loved one's trauma while ignoring one's own mental wellness leads to total emotional exhaustion.
The Hypervigilance-by-Proxy Battle: Caregivers alter their entire lives to manage a warrior's triggers, walking on eggshells to prevent outbursts or panic attacks.
The Total Isolation Battle: The demanding nature of round-the-clock care cuts caregivers off from their own friends, careers, and social support systems.
Winning the Tactical Engagement

Winning does not mean reaching a state of zero symptoms. Winning means taking back control of your life from the trauma.
Tactical Tools for the Battlefield
Grounding Exercises: Use the 5-4-3-2-1 technique (naming things you see, touch, hear, smell, and taste) to instantly disrupt flashbacks and anchor your mind in the present.
Interdisciplinary Clinical Care: Utilize professional medical programs tailored for complex injuries, including cognitive rehabilitation for TBI and evidence-based trauma therapy.
Therapeutic Journaling: Use regular writing habits to give chaotic thoughts a safe place to land, systematically lowering daily emotional stress.
Peer Network Connection: Actively engage in safe spaces like Victory for Veterans to break down isolation through shared experiences.
Pre-Mission Preparation: Advance Planning

You can build resilience and protect your well-being before a crisis ever hits.

Establish an Active Trigger Map: Document known smells, sights, and sounds that spike your anxiety, then share this tactical map with your immediate family or caregivers.
Assign an Emergency Battle Buddy: Designate a trusted peer or family member who knows exactly what to do when you send a specific code word during a crisis.
Designate a Sensory Safe Haven: Set up a dedicated, quiet room in your house equipped with blackout curtains and noise-canceling headphones to handle TBI or panic flare-ups.
Save Essential Extraction Resources: Pre-program critical hotlines into your phone, such as the Veterans/Military Crisis Line (Dial 988, then Press 1), for instant 24/7 support.
Peer Group Discussion Questions
Let’s open up the floor. Take a look at these questions, share your truth, and let us get your six.
The Tactical Shift: For the veterans and first responders here, what is the hardest part about transitioning from the structured camaraderie of your service unit to civilian life?
Identifying the Armor: What specific "defensive armor" or coping mechanism do you rely on most when a trigger hits, and is it truly helping you heal or just helping you hide?
The Hidden Gems: For our caregivers in the room, what is one hidden boundary or piece of support you desperately need from others but find difficult to ask for?
Sharing the Blueprint: What is one practical, everyday tool or routine that has helped you win a quiet victory over brain fog, anxiety, or hypervigilance this week?

The battles behind us were fierce, but the battles yet to come require a different kind of courage. The war within does not end when we turn off our sirens, take off the uniform, or step off the battlefield. New triggers will emerge, hard days will test our foundations, and the weight of these invisible wounds will occasionally feel heavy. But remember this: your strength is not measured by your silence, and you are not broken.Every single day you choose to keep pushing forward, you win.
Your next mission starts right now. Do not retreat into isolation. If you are struggling, drop the mask and raise your hand. If you are standing strong, reach back and pull a brother or sister up. Take your designated seat at the table. Log into the next Warriors for Life session, check in on your battle buddies, and let us continue to fight these invisible battles together—as one unbreakable tribe. Honor and respect always!
