Drop in & Join Us for Warriors for Life (WFL) TONIGHT as Mikel & Friends Talk About the "Navigating the Healing Journey!"

Drop in with Volunteer and Army Veteran Mikel Burroughs for "Burly's Warriors" edition of Warriors for Life (WFL) Online, presented by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).

We are asking everyone to share who we are and what support that Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV) is providing via WFL. If you know someone who is a veteran, first responder or a family member/caregiver, please ask them to join us for at least one meeting so they can learn more about what we do and how they can share their wisdom with others who may be able to learn from them.

"Navigating the Healing Journey!"

Join Army Veteran Mikel Burroughs and friends for a discussion about "Navigating the Healing Journey!" of Invisible Wounds and Mental Health issues.

Welcome to tonight’s presentation of the Warriors for Life (WFL) Online Peer Support Network, proudly brought to you by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).

Tonight, we dive deep into the messy, non-linear reality of healing from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and the cumulative trauma carried by our first responders, active-duty service members, and caregivers.

Good evening, everyone, and welcome to tonight’s "Burly’s Warriors!" edition of the Warriors for Life (WFL) Online Peer Support Network! Whether you are a combat veteran, a first responder on the frontline, an active-duty service member, or one of the dedicated caregivers who hold down the fort—welcome home.

Tonight, we are pulling back the curtain on the healing journey. We know that invisible wounds do not come with a timeline or a field manual. The road to recovery is long, steep, and full of unexpected twists. But remember: never give up, never give in, and just keep working at it because you want to thrive, not just survive! We are here to get each other's six. You are in a safe, judgment-free zone. Let's break the isolation and talk about what real healing looks like.

5 Core Dimensions of the Healing Journey

How to Begin Really Healing

Healing from invisible wounds requires shifting from emergency survival mode to long-term wellness.

  • Acceptance: Acknowledging that trauma has altered your baseline without defining your entire future identity.

  • Connection: Breaking the instinctual cycle of isolation by engaging with peer networks who 'just know'.

  • Holistic Modalities: Integrating non-drug solutions, such as VFV's Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) or trauma-informed somatic therapies.

  • Vulnerability: Lowering the tactical shield to speak open and honest truths about internal struggles.

Signs You Are on the Right Path

Progress is rarely a straight line upwards. Green flags often look like quiet, internal shifts rather than massive life changes.

  • Emotional Regulation: Noticing a longer gap between an external trigger and your internal reaction.

  • Reclaimed Agency: Making intentional daily choices rather than reacting purely out of survival instincts.

  • Restored Sleep: Experiencing fewer night terrors, more restful sleep cycles, and calmer mornings.

  • Future Orientation: Catching yourself planning for next month or next year, rather than just surviving the next hour.

  • Boundary Setting: Comfortably saying 'no' to environments or people that drain your emotional reserves.

Signs You Have Taken a Wrong Turn

When the journey gets overwhelming, it is common to slip into old defensive habits. Recognizing these warning lights early prevents a total tailspin.

  • Total Isolation: Actively avoiding phone calls, skipping WFL meetings, and pulling away from loved ones.

  • Escapism Reliance: Increasing the use of alcohol, prescription misuse, or compulsive behaviors to numb out pain.

  • Chronic Irritability: Reacting with immediate flash-rage to minor, everyday inconveniences or loved ones.

  • Stagnant Cynicism: Believing that nothing will ever improve and that everyone is out to get you.

  • Physical Neglect: Stopping basic routines like proper nutrition, physical movement, hygiene, and medical care.

What Caregivers Can Do to Support

Caregivers are the hidden pillars of our community. Supporting a warrior means balancing active help with deep patience.

  • Co-Regulation: Remaining a calm, steady anchor when the warrior is experiencing a high-anxiety trigger.

  • Active Listening: Providing a space for them to speak without immediately trying to 'fix' or solve the problem.

  • Enforcing Space: Recognizing when a warrior needs quiet time alone to decompress without feeling pressured.

  • Self-Preservation: Seeking their own peer support to prevent secondary traumatic stress and caregiver burnout.

What Average Citizens Can Do to Help

Civilians do not need a military or first responder background to make an authentic, lasting impact on a warrior's life.

  • Drop the Stigma: Create spaces where discussing mental health challenges is treated as a sign of true strength.

  • Listen Without Urgency: Let warriors share their stories at their own pace without asking invasive questions.

  • Consistent Presence: Check in regularly with a simple text, ensuring they know they are not forgotten.

  • Active Partnership: Support organizations like Victory for Veterans by volunteering or sharing resource links.

Before we sign off from tonight's 'Burly's Warriors' edition, remember this: the battle within is the toughest one you will ever fight, but you never have to fight it alone. Look around this virtual room. This is your tribe. If you feel like you took a wrong turn this week, put it in reverse, grab a hand from someone in this group, and let's get back on the trail together.
