Join our Volunteer, Army Veteran & Peer Support Specialist/Supervisor Derrick Iozzio TONIGHT for "Forever Forward!" edition of Warriors for Life (WFL) Online, sponsored and presented by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).
We are asking everyone to share who we are and the support that Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV) is providing through Warriors for Life (WFL). If you know someone who is a veteran, first responder or a family member/caregiver, please ask them to join us for at least one meeting so they can learn more about what we do and how they can share their wisdom with others who may be able to learn from them.

"PTSD Awareness Month!"

Join Derrick and friends TONIGHT for "PTSD Awareness Month!" A comprehensive discussion about PTSD and Mental Health.
📣 Welcome, everyone, to tonight’s Warriors for Life "Forever Forward!" peer support network. My name is Derrick, and I am honored to facilitate tonight's meeting. June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time dedicated to breaking the stigma, sharing our truths, and lifting each other up.
Whether you are a Veteran, a First Responder on the front lines at home, an Active Duty Service Member navigating the unique pressures of military life, or a Caregiver or Family Member holding down the fort—you belong here. Tonight is a safe, judgment-free zone. We are not here to fix each other; we are here to walk alongside each other. No matter how heavy the rucksack feels tonight, remember our motto: Forever Forward! Let’s get started.
🔍 Section 1: How PTSD Affects Our Community & Symptoms

PTSD changes how the brain processes threats. It keeps the nervous system trapped in a constant state of survival. While the root causes differ across roles, the physiological and psychological toll is deeply shared.
🪖 Veterans & Active Duty Service Members

The Impact: Combat exposure, military sexual trauma (MST), training accidents, and the high-stress nature of deployment. Active Duty members face the added pressure of hiding symptoms due to fear of career degradation or medical discharge.
Key Symptoms:
Intrusive Memories: Flashbacks, nightmares, and intense physical reactions to triggers (like fireworks or loud noises).
Hypervigilance: Constantly scanning rooms for exits, sitting with backs to the wall, and an exaggerated startle response.
Emotional Numbing: Feeling detached from loved ones, loss of interest in hobbies, and an inability to feel positive emotions.
Avoidance: Steering clear of crowds, driving routes, or conversations that recall the trauma.
🚑 First Responders (Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, Dispatch)

The Impact: Chronic, cumulative exposure to horrific events, daily life-or-death decision-making, and the expectation to switch immediately from a tragedy to the next 911 call.
Key Symptoms:
Compassion Fatigue: Becoming cynical, numb, or indifferent to the suffering of others as a defense mechanism.
Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia driven by shift work combined with an inability to turn off the "alert" brain.
Irritability & Anger: Sudden outbursts of rage, often triggered by minor daily inconveniences.
Substance Misuse: Using alcohol or prescription drugs to quiet the mind and force sleep.
🏡 Caregivers & Families

The Impact: Coping with a loved one's unpredictable moods, carrying the entire household burden, and experiencing "Secondary Traumatic Stress" from hearing about or witnessing their loved one's trauma responses.
Key Symptoms:
Vicarious Trauma: Developing PTSD-like symptoms (anxiety, hypervigilance) just by caring for the traumatized individual.
Chronic Burnout: Physical and emotional exhaustion, leading to feelings of resentment or hopelessness.
Walking on Eggshells: Constant anxiety regarding triggering a loved one's anger or panic.
Isolation: Cutting off friends and extended family out of shame or the logistical difficulty of leaving the house.
🛠️ Section 2: Evidenced-Based Treatments & Tools

🛑 Before we sign off tonight, take a look around this virtual room. Look at the faces and the names. You are not alone. PTSD wants to isolate you. It wants to tell you that you are broken, that your family is better off without you, or that nobody understands. Tonight, we proved that voice wrong.
We are a tribe. We carry the weight together. If tonight brought up some heavy emotions, please don't sit in them alone. Reach out to a peer, log back into the chat, or call someone you trust. Be gentle with yourselves tonight. Your mind and body did exactly what they were designed to do to keep you alive—now, we work together to help you heal.
