Join Mikel & Friends TONIGHT for "Emotional Regulation & Boundary Setting!" with Warriors for Life (WFL)

Drop in with Volunteer and Army Veteran Mikel Burroughs for "Burly's Warriors" edition of Warriors for Life (WFL) Online, presented by Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV).

We are asking everyone to share who we are and what support that Victory for Veterans, Inc. (VFV) is providing via WFL. If you know someone who is a veteran, first responder or a family member/caregiver, please ask them to join us for at least one meeting so they can learn more about what we do and how they can share their wisdom with others who may be able to learn from them.

"Emotional Regulation & Boundary Setting!"

Join Army Veteran Mikel Burroughs and friends for a discussion about "Emotional Regulation & Boundary Setting!"

Welcome, Warriors. In combat and first responder scenarios, survival depends on rapid reactions and shutting down emotional noise to complete the mission. However, when you return to civilian life, that same hyper-vigilance turns inward. PTSD often makes emotions feel like an unpredictable flash flood—anger, hyper-arousal, or numbness hit without warning.

Tonight, we are discussing how Emotional Regulation and Boundary Setting work together as a tactical shield. This modality is not about erasing your feelings. It is about regaining your command element so you choose your response rather than letting a trigger choose it for you.

What It Is & How It Works

This modality combines internal management with external fortifications to help you stabilize your nervous system.

1. Emotional Regulation (Internal Management)

This is your internal thermostat. When PTSD triggers an adrenaline dump, your brain enters survival mode (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn). Emotional regulation uses grounding techniques to signal your brain that the immediate threat has passed.

  • Tactical Breathing: 4-second inhale, 4-second hold, 4-second exhale, 4-second hold. This directly lowers your heart rate.

  • The 5-4-3-2-1 Method: Acknowledge 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste to bring your mind back to the present room.

2. Boundary Setting (External Fortifications)

This is your perimeter defense. Boundaries are the clear rules you establish regarding what you will and will not accept from other people and environments.

  • Environmental Boundaries: Choosing to leave a crowded restaurant when your anxiety spikes.

  • Relational Boundaries: Telling family members, "I want to talk about this, but I need 15 minutes alone right now to cool down first."

When Should This Modality Be Used?

This technique is both a preventative maintenance routine and an emergency protocol.

  • Proactively (Daily Maintenance): Practice grounding exercises when you are already calm. Set explicit boundaries with your spouse, coworkers, or friends before a high-stress deployment, shift, or family gathering occurs.

  • Reactively (In the Sandbox): Deploy these skills immediately when you sense a flashback, an intrusive memory, or an unexplained wave of rage beginning to build.

Caregiver Support: How the Support Network Assists

Caregivers are the forward observers in this fight. They often see the storm coming before the Warrior does. Here is how they can assist without triggering a defensive reaction:

  • Co-Regulation: When a Warrior is spinning out, a caregiver can remain calm, use a low voice, and model steady breathing to help bring the Warrior's nervous system back down.

  • Honoring the "Tactical Pause": If a Warrior communicates a boundary (e.g., "I need space"), the caregiver respects it immediately rather than forcing an immediate confrontation.

  • Perimeter Defense: Caregivers can help enforce boundaries with extended family or crowds, acting as a buffer so the Warrior can step away safely.

Warriors, mastering emotional regulation and boundary setting is not a quick fix. It is a perishable skill that requires constant drilling. When you spent years training your brain to survive chaotic environments, it takes time to retrain it to exist safely in peaceful ones. Give yourself tactical grace. Every time you choose to take a breath instead of throwing a punch, or choose to step away instead of blowing up a relationship, you are winning the battle against your trauma. You are taking back the high ground.
